U20 Lake Superior Challenge

For the 2nd year running 6 U20 converged on Duluth Yacht Club for the Annual Lake Superior Championship.

We kicked it off Friday night with a steak and corn cookout and the accompanying Goombays. After a look at the crowd we could see that all boats except #222 had numerous prior Goombay encounters and knew that two was the limit. Saturday built to a shifty 20 knot West wind which meant flat water on the Big Lake and lots of ON PLANE conditions. The accelerations were intense and the broaches were magnificent. Back at the dock Saturday Nate had the quote of the day “Never have so few races been decided by so many broaches” Each boat averaged 3 for the day, with the shifts causing most of Windex washing.

Sunday was a much more consistently light day, brilliant sunny Midwestern conditions, a persistence right shift, perfect temp and great fun. In the spirit of trying to get more people hooked on this great boat we waived the owner/driver rule which gave some crews a chance to drive.

Big thanks to the Race Committee and DYC for hosting us, they did a great job! Thanks to all who traveled to get there, which BTW was every boat. Highlights:Sassy B letting a 12 year old kid drive.Gumby showing us a double broach (both Port and Starboard lay downs) at the mark. Gregg being the toughest competitor on the course. #222/ Bob showing up and racing in his very first Regatta.George liking it enough to consider moving up this way. The tightest U20 event to date results ended within a point between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
